RYA Level 2 Powerboat Refresher Training
Already got your RYA Level 2 certificate but feel a bit rusty, haven’t driven for years, or just want to polish a few skills? Our Powerboat Level 2 Refresher Training is a short, focused practical session designed exactly for you — to rebuild confidence, sharpen techniques learned on the course, and practise the bits that make boating fun again.
Who Is Eligible for Refresher Training?
This refresher is ideal for people who:
- Are RYA Level 2 Powerboat qualified.
- Haven’t driven regularly (or at all) for a while and want to regain confidence.
- Want targeted practice on specific skills; berthing, close-quarters control, man-overboard recoveries, etc.
Note: this is a refresher / retraining session to restore skills and confidence — it is not a direct assessment or re-issue of the Level 2 certificate.
What to Expect During the Assessment
What we work on Each session is tailored to the group and your goals, but typical focus areas include:
- Boat handling at all speeds — slow control, planing, tight turns.
- Close-quarters manoeuvring & berthing — practical tips and repeated practice until it feels natural.
- Launching & recovery — trailer work (if requested), rigging, slipping.
- Man overboard drills — safe, repeatable recovery techniques so the procedure becomes second nature.
- Rules of the water & safety refresher — collision regulations, lookout, risk awareness.
- Short navigation refresh — chartwork basics, compass use and simple passage planning.
- Engine checks & basic fault handling — pre-departure checks, simple troubleshooting.
- Throwlines, knots & deckwork — a quick practical session on essential boatcraft.
Why Choose the Direct Assessment Route?
- Regain confidence quickly — focused practice returns competence much faster than guessing on your own.
- Personalised coaching — we identify and fix the small habits that cause big problems.
- Safe environment — controlled conditions, experienced instructors and measured progression.
- Fun & practical — lots of helm time, immediate feedback and exercises that translate straight to everyday boating.

Equipment needed
For all our powerboat courses we advise you to wear more than you think you’ll need. Being on the water (even on a warm day) combined with high windspeeds means you’ll get cold and probably wet from spray and waves.
We will provide you with a full kit list upon booking.
- Comfortable clothing, suitable for the time of year*
- Waterproof jacket and trousers
- Old Trainers / plimsolls / neoprene beach shoes**
- Glasses retainers (if you wear glasses).
- Waterproof phone case.
- Medication / Tablets / Inhaler etc.
The above list is just a guide and appropriate clothing for the time of year should be worn.
*Clothing should comprise of several layers to trap the warmth. Please do not wear denim as it restricts movement, is cold when wet and is slow to dry.
**Please wear soft-soled shoes such as trainers; you are not permitted to wear walking boots or footwear with sharp heels etc. as these can damage the tubes of our boat.
