Night Navigation

Our Night Navigation course is designed to give you a safe environment in which to learn and practise how to navigate at night. This is a skill that is often neglected or overlooked and it's not until your journey has taken you into the hours of darkness or the mist has rolled in that you realise how important these skills are.
Our course starts in daylight allowing you the time to get your bearings and get used to the map, before really refining your compass and pacing skills at night. This is where compass skills really come into their own; you are unlikely to be able to tell where you are just by looking at the map as landmarks may be obscured by darkness and even large, important features that would give you your bearings e.g. mountains and lakes, may not be visible. For this reason, a previous knowledge of compass reading is necessary, either from our Navigation Skills course or from other previous relevant experience.
During the course we will cover
- Map to ground navigation
- Route planning
- Time, distance, speed
- Compass techniques
- Aiming off, attack points, boxing and search patterns
