Wilderness First Aid - ECP Exploration Medicine

Wilderness First Aid - ECP Exploration Medicine. Outdoor emergency first aid courses run in Sussex.

ECP Exploration Medicine First Aid Course

This 2 day course is designed for all outdoor enthusiasts, trekkers, travellers, group leaders and instructors. The course is extremely practical and covers a range of skills needed for those faced with first aid situations in remote environments. Whether running a group or working as part of a team, having first aid skills specific to the environment you are in is a useful asset to any outdoor or wilderness activity where access to medical and hospital supplies is compromised.

When travelling or working in remote locations it is vital that you know and understand the potential dangers of your environment. This two day course equips you to read the environment and make use of what is around you if you do get into a first aid scenario. We provide help on what to pack in your first aid kit and the type of equipment useful to avoid possible dangers. As well as general first aid skills relative to the UK, this course will highlight issues that may be specifically encountered while travelling abroad, such as tropical diseases and altitude sickness, and the first actions that should be taken should these situations occur.

The course makes use of both classroom based lessons and outdoor practical scenarios with real hands on learning to strengthen the students' first aid skills in both theory and practical knowledge readying them for outdoor work and making them a vital asset to any team working in these situations.

The wilderness first aid trainers have a large amount of experience running a range of first aid courses, many of them having the expertise of being outdoor and mountain leaders themselves. Not only can they offer practical advice on what to do in an emergency situation but more importantly the teaching includes how to spot warning signs so that you may hopefully never need to use your wilderness first aid skills.

Each student will come away with a certificate of completion that is valid for 3 years, which also exceeds the specifications for the HSE Emergency First Aid at Work, a personal first aid manual so they can refresh their skills after the course and a face shield, dressing and triangular bandage to pack in their kit and practise at home.

Those who wish to learn these skills but feel the tropical/altitude element is not necessary for them can focus solely on the UK wilderness based skills with the ECP Venturer Medicine course.

If you have already completed this course and want to develop your skills, the next step is to take the ECP Advanced Explorer Medicine first aid course.

The Exploration Medicine course was brilliant: over two days I went from having no knowledge of first aid to feeling comfortable and confident in both 'normal' and 'outdoor' first aid situations. There was a good mixture of theory and practice, the atmosphere was relaxed and friendly and, most importantly, it was fun!
