This is a two-day course designed to introduce either a complete beginner or an indoor climber to climbing outside on some real rock using some of the UK's finest crags. Courses are normally held in the Peak District National Park, South Wales, Devon and Cornwall, other areas are available.
The Peak District is a mecca for British climbing and the millstone gritstone outcrops are recognised as some of the finest rock climbing sites in the world. It is conventionally split into the northern Dark Peak, where most of the moorland is found and whose geology is gritstone, and the southern White Peak, where most of the population lives and where the geology is mainly limestone-based. The park's controlling authority claims it to be the world's second most popular national park.
The climbing in the Wye Valley is situated high above The River Wye, which is the sixth-longest river in the UK. Where it meets the limestone in the Forest of Dean it is forced through a series of meanders, until it finally meets the Severn estuary at Chepstow. The Wye itself is a Site of Special Scientific Interest and one of the most important rivers in the UK for nature conservation. Much of the lower valley is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and forms part of the border between England and Wales.
Penwith in Cornwall is renowned for its rugged coastline with stunning cliffs, promontories sprinkled with lighthouses and mine chimneys, inlets, coves, stacks and needle sharp reefs! Cornwall has always captured the imagination with its quaint fishing villages, mines and its darker past with smugglers! Sennen Cove is just over a mile north of Land's End and boasts one of the loveliest stretches of sand in Cornwall, Whitesands Beach, and still retains much of the charm of an old fishing village. It is a popular spot with climbers and surfers alike, most of the climbing being on the granite sea cliffs offering very atmospheric climbing.
